What Happens After Railway Chart Preparation?

Once the reservation chart is prepared, ticket statuses are locked, waitlists are cleared, and specific rules apply. Learn exactly what happens the moment your train's chart is finalised.

The moment the reservation chart is prepared, every ticket on that train moves into its final state. Understanding what happens after charting can save you from missing your journey or losing money on refunds.

The Chart Locks Everything

When the CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) system generates the first reservation chart, it freezes the booking database for that train. From this point onward:

  • No more online cancellations are accepted for confirmed e-tickets
  • Waitlisted e-tickets are auto-cancelled if still unconfirmed
  • RAC tickets are assigned specific berths
  • New bookings switch to Current Availability mode

As per the Railway Board circular of December 12, 2025, the first chart is prepared at least 10 hours before departure for most trains. The final chart is prepared 30 minutes before departure.

What Happens to Each Ticket Status

Confirmed (CNF) Tickets

If your ticket shows CNF after chart preparation, your berth is locked. Your coach number and berth number are final. The TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) carries a copy of the chart and will verify your details against it when you board.

Key points for CNF passengers after charting:

  • You cannot cancel online after the first chart. To cancel, you must visit the station counter up to 30 minutes before departure or file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) on IRCTC for a partial refund.
  • Boarding point changes are not allowed after chart preparation.
  • Name, age, or gender changes are not permitted on confirmed tickets after charting.

RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) Tickets

RAC passengers are assigned specific side lower berths at chart time. Two RAC passengers share one side lower berth. After the first chart, your RAC status may still upgrade to CNF at the final chart if cancellations occur.

If your RAC ticket does not upgrade at the final chart, the TTE can still allot a full berth to you after the train departs if confirmed passengers are no-shows.

Waitlisted (WL) Tickets

For e-tickets: If your ticket is still waitlisted after the final chart, it is automatically cancelled. The refund (minus a nominal clerkage fee of INR 60 to INR 240 depending on class) is credited to your source account within 5-7 business days. You do not need to take any action.

For counter tickets: You must cancel manually at the station to claim a refund. If you do not cancel, no refund is processed.

Important: You cannot board the train with a waitlisted ticket after chart preparation. Doing so is a violation of railway rules and you may be penalised.

Tatkal Waiting List (TQWL) Tickets

Tatkal waitlisted tickets work differently. If a TQWL ticket remains unconfirmed at the first chart, it does not get upgraded from general quota cancellations. TQWL tickets that are not confirmed at chart preparation are auto-cancelled and refunded.

For more on how different ticket types behave, see our guide on CNF, RAC, WL, and RLWL ticket statuses.

Refund Rules After Chart Preparation

The refund you receive depends on when you cancel and your ticket type:

Confirmed Ticket Cancellation After Charting

  • Online cancellation: Not available after the first chart
  • Station counter: You can cancel up to 30 minutes before departure
  • TDR filing: You can claim a partial refund by filing a TDR on IRCTC. The refund amount depends on the time of filing relative to departure

RAC Ticket Cancellation After Charting

  • Cancel at least 30 minutes before departure: Fixed charge of INR 60 (Sleeper) or INR 120 (AC classes) applies
  • Cancel after 30 minutes before departure: No refund. You must file a TDR

Waitlisted Ticket (Auto-Cancelled)

  • Full fare minus clerkage fee is refunded automatically
  • Clerkage fee ranges from INR 60 (Second Sitting) to INR 240 (First AC/Executive Class)

Tatkal Ticket After Charting

  • No refund on confirmed Tatkal tickets cancelled after chart preparation
  • Tatkal waitlisted tickets that auto-cancel due to non-confirmation are refunded with Tatkal charges deducted

Current Booking: Booking After Chart Preparation

Once the first chart is prepared, any vacant berths released from unutilised quotas or cancellations become available under Current Booking. According to IRCTC guidelines:

  • Only e-tickets are allowed under Current Booking
  • Only confirmed tickets are issued (no waitlist or RAC)
  • Only senior citizen and disabled concessions are applicable
  • Boarding point changes are not allowed
  • Name, age, or gender changes are not allowed

This is your best option if you missed booking earlier and want to travel on short notice. Check the chart vacancy to see available berths.

Coach and Berth Assignment

After chart preparation, the coach composition is finalised. Passengers who were booked under serial allocation (where no specific berth was assigned at booking time) receive their coach and berth numbers at this stage.

The coach position may change if the train reverses direction at a major junction. The engine is detached and re-attached to the opposite end, reversing the coach sequence. Always check the platform display boards at your boarding station for the latest coach position.

What the TTE Does After Chart Preparation

The TTE receives the reservation chart before the train departs. Their responsibilities include:

  • Verifying passenger identities against the chart
  • Allocating vacant berths caused by no-shows to RAC passengers
  • Handling berth change requests (subject to availability)
  • Issuing excess fare tickets to passengers who upgrade their class

The TTE carries a device that shows real-time berth occupancy. If a confirmed passenger does not board, the TTE marks them as no-show and the berth becomes available for allotment.

Operational Changes After Charting

In rare cases, operational changes can affect tickets even after chart preparation:

  • Coach replacement: If a coach is damaged or requires maintenance, passengers are reallocated to other coaches
  • Train merger: If two trains are merged, charts may be reissued
  • Rescheduling: If a train is rescheduled, the chart timing adjusts accordingly. However, chart timing is based on the scheduled departure, not the delayed departure

These situations are uncommon. Indian Railways typically ensures affected passengers are accommodated.

How GapSeat and Third-Party Tools Work After Charting

After the chart is prepared, third-party tools analyse the publicly available chart data to identify vacancy patterns. Tools like GapSeat perform station-pair analysis:

  • They scan every station pair on the train’s route to find berths vacant for specific legs
  • They identify “seat hopping” opportunities - combining multiple partial-vacancy segments
  • They provide real-time vacancy alerts for your preferred train and route

These tools do not have access to any data that is not publicly available through Indian Railways. They simply present the chart data in a more accessible format. For booking, you still need to use the official IRCTC platform.

Chart Preparation Does Not Apply to All Trains

Reservation charts are prepared only for trains with reserved accommodation. Unreserved trains (passenger trains, suburban locals) do not have reservation charts. For such trains, passengers travel on general tickets without assigned berths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my boarding station after chart preparation?

No. Boarding point changes are not allowed after the chart is prepared.

Do I get a refund if I miss my train after charting?

If you have a confirmed ticket and miss the train, you can file a TDR within 24 hours of departure to claim a partial refund. The refund depends on the distance not travelled.

What happens if my name is misspelled on the ticket after charting?

Name changes are not permitted after chart preparation. However, minor spelling errors typically do not prevent boarding. The TTE usually overlooks small discrepancies if the PNR and other details match.

Can additional coaches be added after chart preparation?

Yes, during peak seasons, Indian Railways may add extra coaches. When this happens, the chart is revised and waitlisted passengers may get confirmed. Keep checking your PNR status until the final chart.

Is the chart the same for every station on the route?

Yes. The chart is prepared from the originating station and applies to all stations on the route. However, coach position and platform information may vary by station.

Ticket Status Codes at a Glance

After chart preparation, your ticket will show one of these statuses on the final chart:

  • CNF: Confirmed - you have a specific berth. Your name appears on the chart with coach and berth number.
  • RAC: Reservation Against Cancellation - you can travel on a shared berth. Your name appears with a side lower berth assignment.
  • WL: Waitlisted - for e-tickets, this status changes to “Cancelled” at chart time. You cannot travel.
  • CAN / Cancelled: Your ticket has been cancelled. The refund (if applicable) will be processed.
  • NC: No Charge - issued on railway passes. The NC code indicates the fare type, not the confirmation status.

For a full explanation of what each status means and how they affect your travel, see our guide on CNF, RAC, WL, and RLWL ticket statuses.

How the TTE Uses the Chart After Departure

Once the train departs, the TTE begins the process of berth verification and reallocation:

  1. The TTE walks through each coach and checks every passenger’s ticket against the chart on their handheld device
  2. Passengers who are confirmed are marked as “travelling”
  3. Berths where the passenger did not board are marked as “no-show”
  4. Vacant berths from no-shows are offered to RAC passengers in order of their RAC position
  5. Any remaining vacant berths may be offered to other passengers who want to upgrade

This process typically takes 30-60 minutes after departure on a long-distance train. If you have an RAC ticket and want to request a full berth, this is the best time to approach the TTE.

Berth Exchanges After Charting

After chart preparation, you can still request a berth change from the TTE, subject to availability:

  • Lower berth for senior citizens: Elderly passengers who were assigned an upper or middle berth can request a lower berth. The TTE may arrange an exchange with another passenger.
  • Family seating: Families split across different coaches may be accommodated together if berths are available.
  • Upgrade requests: Passengers can request an upgrade to a higher class by paying the fare difference to the TTE.

These changes are at the TTE’s discretion and depend on occupancy.

Impact on Food and Catering Services

After chart preparation, IRCTC e-Catering and other food delivery services can identify passengers by coach and berth number. Food ordered through these services is delivered to the correct coach at designated stations. The chart data enables delivery partners to locate passengers efficiently.

If your ticket status changes from RAC to CNF after the initial order, you can update your berth details with the food delivery service to ensure correct delivery.

Summary Timeline After Chart Preparation

Time Event
First chart (10 hours before) Booking freezes. WL e-tickets auto-cancel. RAC berths assigned. Current Booking opens.
Between charts Last-minute cancellations processed. RAC may upgrade to CNF.
Final chart (30 minutes before) Booking closes permanently. Final passenger list locked.
After departure TTE manages no-shows and berth reallocation onboard.

Understanding what happens after chart preparation helps you make informed decisions about cancellations, refunds, and alternative travel. If your ticket is waitlisted, check your PNR status after the first chart and make backup plans early.
