How To Check Confirmed Berth After Charting

Once the chart is prepared, your coach and berth are finalised. Learn how to check your confirmed berth online, through SMS, at the station, and what your ticket status means.

After the reservation chart is prepared, every passenger’s coach and berth number is locked. Whether your ticket was confirmed at booking or upgraded at chart time, here is exactly how to check where you will be sitting.

Check Online via IRCTC

The IRCTC website and mobile app both allow you to check chart status and berth details.

On the IRCTC Website

  1. Go to irctc.co.in and log in with your credentials
  2. Click on “My Account” and select “Booked Ticket History”
  3. Find your PNR and click “View”
  4. The ticket status will show CNF along with your coach number and berth number

Alternatively, use the Charts/Vacancy feature:

  1. On the IRCTC homepage, click “Charts/Vacancy”
  2. Enter your train number, journey date, and boarding station
  3. Click “Get Train Chart”
  4. Select your class to see the coach-wise chart with berth status

On the IRCTC Rail Connect App

  1. Open the IRCTC Rail Connect app and log in
  2. Tap the “Train” icon at the bottom
  3. Select “Chart Vacancy”
  4. Enter your train number and boarding station
  5. The app displays vacant and occupied berths in each coach

For a step-by-step visual guide on finding empty berths, see how to find empty berths after chart preparation.

Check PNR Status Online

You can also check your berth details through PNR status enquiry websites and apps. Third-party tools like RailChart, RailYatri, ConfirmTkt, and NTES (National Train Enquiry System) allow you to check PNR status.

Steps:

  1. Enter your 10-digit PNR number
  2. The status page shows current booking status, coach number, berth number, and whether the chart has been prepared
  3. Once the chart is prepared, the status updates to show your final assignment

Many third-party apps also offer WhatsApp or push notification alerts when your PNR status changes. This is useful if you are waitlisted and hoping for confirmation at chart time.

Check via SMS

Indian Railways provides an SMS-based enquiry service. Send your 10-digit PNR number to 139. You will receive an SMS with your current booking status, including coach and berth number if confirmed.

This method works on all mobile networks and does not require internet access.

Check at the Station

Although Indian Railways stopped pasting paper reservation charts on coaches and platform boards in 2018, you can still check your berth details at the station through:

  • Enquiry counters: Approach the passenger enquiry counter and provide your PNR number. Staff can print your ticket details.
  • Digital display boards: Many stations have electronic display boards showing coach position and berth information for arriving trains.
  • Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs): Some stations have self-service kiosks where you can check PNR status.

Understanding Your Berth Number

Once you have your coach and berth number, here is how to interpret it:

Code Meaning
LB Lower Berth
MB Middle Berth
UB Upper Berth
SL Side Lower Berth
SU Side Upper Berth
RAC Reservation Against Cancellation (shared berth)
CNF Confirmed

Your ticket or PNR status will show something like “B1, 18 LB” meaning Coach B1 (AC 3-Tier), Berth 18, Lower Berth.

What to Check After Charting

Once the chart is prepared, verify these details:

  1. Coach number: Note the coach code (S1, B2, A1, etc.) to find your position on the platform
  2. Berth number: Know whether you have LB, MB, UB, SL, or SU
  3. Boarding station: Confirm the station where you are boarding
  4. PNR status: Ensure it shows CNF or RAC, not WL

For understanding how coach position is determined and where your coach will stop on the platform, read our guide on how coach position is determined in Indian Railways.

What If Your Berth Is Not What You Expected

If your confirmed berth is not suitable (for example, you need a lower berth due to age or medical reasons):

  • After boarding, approach the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) and explain your situation
  • The TTE may exchange your berth with another passenger if they volunteer
  • Senior citizens are given priority for lower berths
  • If a lower berth is vacant due to a no-show, the TTE can reassign it

Berth exchanges are at the discretion of the TTE and subject to availability.

Tracking Multiple Passengers in a Single PNR

If you booked tickets for a group under a single PNR, each passenger has a separate entry in the chart. Your booking will show entries like:

  • Passenger 1: CNF, B1, 18 LB
  • Passenger 2: CNF, B1, 20 UB
  • Passenger 3: CNF, B1, 22 LB

Check each passenger’s details individually. Family groups are typically kept in the same coach, though not always in the same cabin or bay.

After the Train Departs

Once the train departs, the chart data remains accessible. You can check the chart even after the train has left the originating station. The IRCTC Charts/Vacancy feature continues to show berth occupancy for the duration of the journey.

This is useful if you want to:

  • Check if a berth has been vacated at an intermediate station
  • Request the TTE to move to a vacant berth
  • See how full your coach is

Understanding Serially Allocated vs Non-Serially Allocated Berths

The way berths are assigned depends on whether your class uses serial allocation:

Non-serially allocated classes (Sleeper, AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car, Second Sitting): Berths are assigned at the time of booking. Your ticket shows the specific coach and berth number immediately after payment. Chart preparation confirms this allocation but does not change it.

Serially allocated classes (First AC, AC 2-Tier on some trains): Berths are assigned at chart preparation time. Your booking confirmation shows a general status (CNF) but no specific berth number. You will only know your exact coach and berth after the chart is prepared.

For serially allocated classes, it is especially important to check your PNR status after chart preparation to learn your coach and berth numbers.

Using PNR Prediction Tools Before Charting

Before the chart is prepared, you can use PNR prediction tools to estimate your confirmation chances:

  • ConfirmTkt: Analyses historical data to predict whether your waitlisted or RAC ticket will confirm
  • India Rail Info: Shows prediction percentages based on past trends for the same train and date
  • PNR Alert: Monitors your PNR and sends notifications when status changes

These tools are not officially affiliated with Indian Railways but use publicly available data to provide estimates. They are helpful for planning but should not be treated as guarantees.

What to Do If Your Berth Assignment Changes at Chart Time

In rare cases, the berth assigned at chart time differs from what was shown on your ticket:

  1. Coach changed: Your ticket showed S2 but the chart shows S3. This can happen when the rake formation changes.
  2. Berth type changed: Your ticket showed LB but the chart shows UB. This is uncommon but possible if the coach configuration changed.
  3. Status changed from CNF to RAC: This is very rare. If it happens, it indicates a significant operational change.

In all these cases:

  • Accept the chart assignment as final. The TTE will use the chart, not your ticket printout.
  • If the change causes genuine hardship (medical condition, disability), approach the TTE after boarding.
  • File a complaint with IRCTC if the change seems erroneous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my berth number change after chart preparation?

In normal circumstances, no. Once the chart is prepared and your berth is assigned, it is locked. The only exception is if the TTE approves a voluntary exchange between passengers onboard.

Does chart preparation affect seat number for Chair Car trains?

Yes. For Chair Car (CC) and Executive Class (EC) trains like Shatabdi Express, the same rules apply. Your seat number is assigned at chart time or confirmed at booking, depending on the train.

What if my berth number is not showing even after chart preparation?

If your PNR shows CNF but the berth number is blank, it may be a system delay. Wait a few minutes and check again. If the issue persists, contact IRCTC customer care at 0755-3934141 or care@irctc.co.in.

Is there a difference in checking berth for Rajdhani trains?

No. Rajdhani Express follows the same charting and berth assignment process as other trains. The chart preparation timing depends on departure time, not the train category.

Summary

Checking your confirmed berth after charting is straightforward. Use the IRCTC website or app, check your PNR status on any railway enquiry platform, or visit the station enquiry counter. Once confirmed, note your coach and berth details, reach the correct platform position before the train arrives, and board with confidence.
