Railway Chart Not Prepared Yet? Here's Why
Seeing 'Chart Not Prepared' on your PNR status? This is normal in most cases. Learn the real reasons why charts are delayed, when you should worry, and what to do next.
When you check your PNR status and see “Chart Not Prepared,” it is easy to feel anxious. However, in most cases, this message is perfectly normal. Here is why charts are not always ready the moment you check, and when you should be concerned.
The Most Common Reason: It Is Too Early
The reservation chart is generated at a fixed time before departure. If you check before that time, the system will show “Chart Not Prepared.” This does not mean anything is wrong.
Under the current rules (effective since December 2025), the first chart is prepared:
- 10 hours before departure for trains departing between 2:01 PM and 11:59 PM, and for trains departing between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM
- By 8:00 PM the previous night for trains departing between 5:01 AM and 2:00 PM
If your train departs at 10:00 PM and you check the chart at 9:00 AM (13 hours before departure), the chart will not have been prepared yet. Check again after the 10-hour mark.
For the exact timing applicable to your train, see how many hours before departure is chart prepared.
Reason 2: Technical Processing Time
When the CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) system initiates chart generation, it does not happen instantly. The system must:
- Freeze the booking database for the train
- Run the CONCERT seat allocation algorithm
- Process all pending cancellations
- Release unutilised quota berths to the general pool
- Assign berths to serially allocated passengers
- Generate the chart document
This process typically takes 5-15 minutes. During this window, the system may display “Chart Not Prepared” even though the process has started. Wait a few minutes and refresh.
Reason 3: Weekend or Holiday Processing
Charts for trains departing on Monday mornings are prepared on Sunday evening (by 8:00 PM). However, during holidays or long weekends, chart processing may sometimes be delayed at certain regional centres. This is uncommon but can happen.
Reason 4: Train Rescheduling or Cancellation
If a train has been rescheduled or cancelled, the chart preparation may be delayed or may not happen at all.
- Rescheduled trains: The chart preparation time is based on the revised departure time communicated by the originating division. Until the revised schedule is confirmed, the chart may show “Not Prepared.”
- Cancelled trains: No chart is generated.
Check the NTES (National Train Enquiry System) or IRCTC website to see if your train has been rescheduled or cancelled.
Reason 5: System Maintenance
IRCTC and CRIS systems undergo periodic maintenance, typically during late night or early morning hours. If you check during a maintenance window, you may see “Chart Not Prepared” even if the chart generation time has passed.
Maintenance windows are usually short (15-30 minutes). Try again after some time.
Reason 6: Your Train Does Not Have a Reservation Chart
Not all trains have reservation charts. The following trains operate without a chart:
- Unreserved passenger trains
- Suburban local trains
- MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) and DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) trains where all coaches are unreserved
If you booked a general (unreserved) ticket for such a train, there will never be a chart prepared for it.
Reason 7: You Are Checking the Wrong Date or Train
A simple but common error: you may be checking the chart for the wrong date or train. Double-check:
- The train number matches your ticket
- The journey date is correct
- You have selected the correct boarding station
Reason 8: Boarding at an Intermediate Station
The chart is prepared based on the train’s departure from the originating station. If you are boarding at an intermediate station, the chart preparation time is still calculated from the originating station’s departure time, not your boarding station.
This means the chart may show as “Not Prepared” relative to your boarding time even though it has been generated for the originating station. However, the chart is unified - once prepared at the origin, it applies to all stations on the route.
When Should You Worry?
You should be concerned if:
- The chart preparation time has passed by more than 30 minutes and the chart still shows “Not Prepared”
- Other passengers on the same train can see their chart but you cannot
- Your PNR status changes to “Cancelled” without explanation
- IRCTC or NTES is not showing any chart data while other trains on the same date show charts
In these situations, take action.
What to Do If the Chart Is Not Prepared
Step 1: Verify the Chart Time
Calculate when your chart should be prepared:
- For trains departing 5:01 AM to 2:00 PM: Chart by 8:00 PM previous night
- For trains departing 2:01 PM onwards: Chart 10 hours before departure
Step 2: Check NTES
Visit the NTES website or app to see if your train is running on time, rescheduled, or cancelled.
Step 3: Refresh After 15 Minutes
System processing delays are common. Wait 15 minutes and check again.
Step 4: Check a Different Platform
Use multiple platforms to verify:
- IRCTC website (Charts/Vacancy feature)
- NTES website
- Third-party apps (RailYatri, ConfirmTkt, etc.)
Step 5: Contact IRCTC
If the chart time has passed and you still see “Chart Not Prepared,” contact IRCTC:
- Phone: 0755-3934141
- Email: care@irctc.co.in
Step 6: Visit the Station
If you are near the station, visit the enquiry counter. Station staff can check the chart status in the PRS system and provide you with the latest information.
What “Chart Not Prepared” Does Not Mean
- It does not mean your ticket is invalid
- It does not mean your train is cancelled
- It does not mean you cannot travel
- It does not mean your PNR is not in the system
It simply means the chart generation process has not started yet for your train.
Understanding the Final Chart
Even after the first chart is prepared, a “final chart” is generated 30 minutes before departure. Between the first and final charts:
- Your ticket status may still change (RAC to CNF, for example)
- Last-minute cancellations are processed
- Current Booking passengers are added to the final chart
If you check after the first chart and see your ticket as confirmed, your name will be on the final chart as well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel if the chart is not prepared?
Yes, if your ticket is confirmed. The chart being “Not Prepared” does not affect your right to travel. You can board with your confirmed ticket and the TTE will verify it.
What if the chart is not prepared even after the train departs?
This is extremely rare. If it happens, it indicates a system error. Contact IRCTC immediately and speak to the Station Master at your boarding station. Do not board the train without confirmation of a valid ticket.
Does ‘Chart Not Prepared’ mean my waitlisted ticket will not be confirmed?
No. The chart not being prepared yet means the confirmation process has not started. Your waitlisted ticket may still confirm once the chart is generated. Keep checking after the chart preparation time.
How long before departure should the chart be available?
The first chart should be available 10 hours before departure (or by 8 PM the previous night for morning trains). The final chart is available 30 minutes before departure.
Why does IRCTC show ‘Chart Not Prepared’ but third-party apps show different?
Some third-party apps use cached data or predictions rather than live chart data. Always verify on the official IRCTC website or NTES for the most accurate and current status.
Summary
“Chart Not Prepared” is usually not a cause for concern. It most often means you are checking before the chart generation time, or the system is still processing. Calculate your chart time based on the train’s departure schedule, wait for the appropriate window, and check again. If the chart remains unavailable after the scheduled time, use the troubleshooting steps above to resolve the issue.
